چکیده
Objective—To compare two experimental scuba mouthpieces with a commercially available design. Methods—A laboratory study using six men to assess eVort, muscle pain, muscle fatigue, facial discomfort, tooth discomfort, and loss of lip sensation using a visual analogue scale. Cephalometric radiographs and analysis of jaw position with each mouth piece were also used. Results—Fully customised mouthpieces caused the least discomfort, muscle pain, fatigue, and eVort. They also resulted in the least mandibular displacement from the resting position. Radiographic analysis of jaw position showed that the fully customised design resulted in the least displacement from normal jaw position. Conclusions—A fully customised design gives the greatest comfort, least eVort, and least mandibular displacement. This design is recommended, particularly for divers who experience temporomandibular dysfunction associated with diving. (Br J Sports Med 2001;35:84–88)

متن کاملTemporomandibular dysfunction syndrome associated with scuba diving mouthpieces.
As previous reports have highlighted that temporomandibular joint dysfunction syndrome can occur during scuba diving due to the use of a diving mouthpiece, 74 divers of varied experience (62 male, 12 female) were asked to evaluate the efficiency of the mouthpiece for the ease of grip, insertion into the mouth, clearing of water, air sharing, comfort and overall efficiency. They also recorded th...
متن کاملBonding durability of custom-made mouthpiece for scuba diving after water storage under pressure.
The purpose of this study was to assess the behavior of laminated thermoforming materials in an underwater environment to understand the durability of mouthpieces for scuba diving. Two thermoforming materials, polyolefin (PO) and ethylene-vinyl acetate copolymer (EV), were laminated and stored in air, 37 degrees C water, and 37 degrees C water under 0.2-MPa pressure for 1 and 4 weeks . The load...
متن کاملEffect of scuba-diving on optic nerve and sheath diameters
Background :There is not any data available about the effect of high bar pressure condition on intracranial pressure. In this study, the effect of diving on the optic nerve and sheath diameters as non-invasive markers of intracranial pressure has been investigated. Methods : Twenty professional male divers from twenty one volunteers were chosen for this cross-sectional study. Only one perso...
متن کاملHortaea werneckii isolated from silicone scuba diving equipment in Spain.
During a survey of black yeasts of marine origin, some isolates of Hortaea werneckii were recovered from scuba diving equipment, such as silicone masks and snorkel mouthpieces, which had been kept under poor storage conditions. These yeasts were unambiguously identified by phenotypic and genotypic methods. Phylogenetic analysis of both the D1/D2 regions of 26S rRNA gene and ITS-5.8S rRNA gene s...
